Rescue Breathing
Lyrics
Soothing sound of traffic from the freeway
Bright white Pomona moon
That Triple Zero that we got in Costa Mesa
Turning golden as a sunrise on the spoon
It was the warmest feeling in the world
When the ghost rose in my throat
It matched the sweetest sound you’d ever heard
Note for note
You came down to meet me on the floor
Splashing that cold water on my head
Holding my eyelids open with your thumbs
Bringing me back from the dead
It was the warmest feeling in the world
A crystal clear signal reaching from the station
There was no tenderness, no good night kiss
Just mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
I had a blanket wrapped around my shoulders
You had a dream of all the oceans in your eyes
No thing on earth could quite nail our coffin shut
Every time that we went under we would rise
It was the warmest feeling in the world
And you were the warmest thing to walk its surface
Easing me painlessly all the way down to the furnace
All the way into the furnace

- This is a song I found in a notebook. You know, I write a lot of stuff that I don't - this will shock you, I kind of have a busy mind. ANd so I'll run across something and go 'what was wrong with that one?' and it probably means a bird flew past or something. Mouse ran under the table. But I thought of it - it's a longer story but we got here at 8 this morning and there was a fella, about 20-ish years old, leaning up against the window of a vape shop. The vape shop was not open yet, because it was 8 in the morning. You don't need to vape that early. Maybe he was waiting for somebody. But he was - may this be a witness for somebody - he was leaning up against the window, leaning over and rocking, and his fists were clenched. Leaning and rocking, shaking his head, and I recognized him, because I used to look a lot like him, leaning up against the window of something at 8 in the morning, after being up all night. And I would have bet my last nickel that he had been up all night and was waiting to see whatever else there was to do, until whatever was inside him lets him go to sleep. And a couple minutes later, the paramedics came. I thought of this song, it's a true story, it's called Rescue Breathing. (2021-08-18 The Black Sheep)
